Cairns Government Office Building 3

Cairns Government Office Building 3 is located on McLeod and Sheridan Streets in Cairns’ city centre. JMc Architects was engaged to oversee rectification works after a roof inspection report found faults in multiple key areas.

This project involved the redesign of a roof that extended one city block between two street frontages. The redesign included both footpath awnings, internal and external planters and entrances, to create a more modern aesthetic appearance.

The entire roof was removed and replaced whilst the building continued to be inhabited by workers. This involved careful planning and staging of the works. The new roofs to the building proper and footpath awnings ensured all box gutters were deleted from the documentation.

This was a principal consultancy project that involved redesigning internal and external planters into more useable spaces. The design intent is to provide an aesthetic solution that responds to the tropical climate and the existing building architecture, whilst alleviating water ingress to the Government Office Building 3.
