The steeply sloping site with a small benched area and steep access driveway is located on the eastern mountainside of Cairns City, with 180 degree views over Bayview Heights, the city and ocean, mountain views south to Walsh's Pyramid.
The concept required a home meeting the needs of a husband and wife team and two adored labrador dogs. The concept gave the opportunity to reflect on the changing needs of these two peoples from successful business operators reaching the early years of retirement. This home will be their home for life. Such was the requirement for dual use of a cyclone bunker and nurse’s quarters with a hidden separate entry.
The framework for the single level living areas included: views to the water from all living areas: transparency to elements from all bedrooms: no physical steps for all spaces. With a heavily glazed façade, wide suspended awnings assist to control the early morning sun in summer and protect from the southern wind driven rain. Class 3 Wind category in a cyclonic region resulted in an extensive use of steel within the roof space to facilitate the open planned concept.

"Sandy and I knew what we wanted as we had lived on the site for 15 years. Our vision of how the new home should look and feel was quite clear. Julianne listened to our requirements and produced on paper exactly what we had in mind"
